Overview - SAR

The Saudi Riyal is the currency used is Saudi Arabia and its ISO code is SAR. The SAR has been the currency of Saudi Arabia since the country came into being and was the currency of Hejaz before Saudi Arabia was created.

The currency has been pegged to the USD since 1986. It is a fixed rate of 1 SAR = 0.266667 USD. The SAR briefly rose to a 20 year high in September 2007 when the US Federal reserve cut interest rates and Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency chose not to follow suit. In December of the same year however the SAR returned to its peg against the USD and has remained affected by USD fluctuations ever since.
